Boilermakers Win Stacey Clark Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 15 Boilermakers (10-1) were crowned champions of the second annual Stacey Clark Classic after a sweep (25-13, 25-17, 25-11) against Loyola (Chicago) (1-10) in Holloway Gymnasium. Azariah Stahl and Brooke Peters earned selections to the all-tournament team with Ashley Evans earning the nod as the tournament’s MVP.Â
Peters put together another stellar performance at libero for Purdue as she registered 12 digs and five service aces in the contest. She aced the Ramblers four times in the third set, three of which came in a 9-0 run to lift the Boilermakers to a 10-1 advantage. The 12-dig effort is her sixth-straight performance and ninth match of the season with 10 or more digs. Altogether, she finishes the weekend with 26 digs and seven aces over the course of six sets to lead a back row that held opponents to a .135 hitting percentage.Â
Stahl and Danielle Cuttino led the Boilermakers on the pins, combining for 22 kills on 33 errorless swings. Together, the pair of outside hitters registered a .667 hitting percentage to fuel Purdue’s .443 hitting percentage on the afternoon. Stahl hit .722 with 13 kills on 18 swings along with six digs while Cuttino hit .600 with nine kills on 15 attempts. Caitlyn Newton and Sherridan Atkinsoncombined for 13 kills as well with Atkinson also earning a pair of service aces. Evans set the offense on 29 of its 44 kills and matched Carissa Damler with five digs.Â
The Boilermakers shift their focus to its first Big Ten matchup of the 2017 season Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. ET in Holloway Gymnasium. Purdue will host a Northwestern (10-2) team that is coming off a 3-0 loss to VCU after it had won nine-straight matches. Its only other loss is a five-setter to LSU back in its first tournament of the season.
