Danville, IL — Rebounds. Rebounding against the much taller #3 Pima Aztecs (29-7) was #16 Ancilla’s undoing as they fell 104-101 in the 7th place game of NJCAA Men’s Division II Basketball Championship Saturday afternoon. Ancilla (24-11) finished 8th in the tournament.
Josh Alcindor had a chance for a tie at the buzzer but his half-court shot was short. Much like the Ancilla players when compared to the Pima team. Pima out rebounded the Chargers 48-36 and many of those led to three or four shots at the basket for the Aztecs. Ancilla fought back with hustle plays.
Ancilla led by as many as six points in the first half, but could not maintain the lead as Pima claimed a 54-49 advantage. The Aztecs pushed that to a 12 point lead with 14:50 of the second half. Once the Aztecs took the lead, they never gave it back.
Mike Green led Ancilla with 28 points, with Ty’Sean Sheppard adding 26 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Alcindor has 11 points and had to leave the game briefly when he fell on his tailbone in the first half. He had just made a pair of three-point baskets.
