UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Head Coach Guy Gadowsky and the Penn State men’s ice hockey team announced captains for the 2018-19 season earlier Thursday morning. Senior Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) will don the ‘C’ while senior classmate Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) and junior Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alberta) will serve as the alternates.

“It is an honor to be named captain of this team and to represent this outstanding university by wearing the ‘C’,” commented Berger. “My teammates and I will do everything in our power to make our fellow Penn Staters proud of this hockey team.”

Berger, who wore an ‘A’ last season, becomes the sixth Nittany Lion captain in program history replacing recent graduate James Robinson ‘18. The senior hasn’t missed a game since stepping on campus in 2015 appearing in all 115 games over the past three seasons. Berger finished the 2017-18 campaign tied for fifth on the team with 27 points on 11 goals and 16 assists and currently ranks third on the all-time scoring list with 89 career points while his 37 goals and 52 assists rank second and fifth, respectively, in program history.

Both Kerr and Biro will be wearing a letter for the first time in their Penn State careers once the season gets underway in October. Kerr has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons, but remains one of the top defenseman in the entire Big Ten when he’s on the ice. The senior has appeared in 82 games in his career scoring six goals while adding 36 assists for 42 points. Kerr’s career plus/minus rating of +20 currently ranks tied for sixth in program history and second among defensemen. The senior was second on the team last season with a plus-12 rating in 20 games played.

Biro has been a constant on the ice for Guy Gadowsky during his first two seasons in Hockey Valley missing just a single game. The junior has appeared in 76 games scoring 15 goals while adding 36 assists for 51 points including a career-year as a sophomore in 2017-18 with 31 points ranking second on the team.

Your first chance to get a glimpse of the 2018-19 Penn State squad will be on October 6 during the annual International Game against Brock. Five days later the Nittany Lions open the season when they host Clarkson for a pair of games on October 11-12.
