Caleb Coolman is now the all-time Penn Boys Basketball Varsity Freshmen season scoring leader.
The 6-foot-4 point-guard scored 16 points at Goshen on Saturday, Feb., 2025, moving him to the top spot past former Penn great Noah Applegate. Current Notre Dame star Markus Burton is third on the list.
Penn defeated Goshen 57-42.
Coolman now has 291 points this season. He moved into sole possession of the Freshmen Varsity scoring record with a free throw to finish off an And-1.
Applegate scored 281 points in his freshman season (2015-2016). The former Hillsdale College star ended up with 1,709 points in his Kingsmen career (2015-2019). He led Penn to a Final Four appearance in 2019.
Burton, Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 2023, is third on the Varsity Freshmen scoring list with 236 points scored in the 2019-2020 season. Burton is Penn’s all-time scoring leader and the all-time St. Joseph County scoring leader with 2,273 points. Burton led Penn to a Final Four appearance.
Former Bethel University standout Tyler Brown is fourth on the Varsity Freshmen list. He scored 161 points in 2002-2023, and finished with 1,210 points in his career (2002-2006). Penn won Sectional and Regional Championships in Brown’s Senior season.
Fifth on the list is Tommy Kurth, who scored 127 points in the 2005-2006 season. The former Valparaiso University student-athlete scored 997 points for Penn from 2005-2009. He also played on a Sectional and Regional Championship team at Penn.
Coolman leads Penn in scoring with an average of 16.8 points a game. Coolman also leads Penn in rebounds (5.6 a game), assists (4.7 a game) and steals 1.5. He scored a career high 32 points in a 67-66 upset of No. 12 (4-A) Fort Wayne Wayne on Jan. 25. He scored 17 points in Penn’s 76-72 upset of No. 1 (3-A) South Bend St. Joseph on Jan. 24.
