BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The inaugural season of track and field at Southeastern opened at the Birmingham Southern Indoor Icebreaker, giving the fledgling team a taste of collegiate competition.
While no national qualifying standards were met, the SEU runners showed those numbers are very attainable.
Davonte Vanterpool qualified for the final in the 60 meter hurdles, placing fifth overall, and second among non-NCAA Division I competition in a time of 8.52. He earned four team points, and missed the qualifying standard by a tenth of a second.
In the men’s 60 meter dash, Trey Alford was a tenth of a second off the ‘B’ Standard with a 7.02, and the 13th fastest time of 72 participants. Alford was 17th in the 200 in a time of 22.48, again, missing the standard by a tenth.
On the women’s side, Macy Peterson missed the ‘B’ Standard by a second with a 10:36 in the 3000 meter run. Peterson earned a team point with her eighth-place finish. Madison Welch was 10th in 10:40 in the event.
Ashley Higgs and Namiah Simpson 8.12 and 8.13 in the 60 meter dash. Miyah Ford posted a 27.89 in the 200. Simpson also ran a 1:01.51 in the 400.
The Fire return to action in January.
