LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern University head football coach Keith Barefield announced the 2019 signing class for the program, which includes 19 true freshmen and 10 transfers.

Of the 19 freshmen, 11 are on the defensive side of the ball.

“We wanted to make sure we addressed the needs we know we have with the loss of our seniors, mainly on defense where we lose three seniors on the defensive line,” said Barefield. “We acquired the depth and talent we need to address some concerns.”

Sixteen signees are from Florida with the remaining three from Alabama.

“Overall, our strategy when we go in is to make ourselves better and recruit talent that we think is better than what we have,” said Barefield.

The 10 transfers are on campus and will begin spring practice with the Fire on February 16th.

“We brought in some guys that have a lot of maturity and a lot of experience, said Barefield. “This spring you’ll see a marked increase in talent across the board.”

The Fire are coming off a 7-3 season and a fourth consecutive conference championship.

Notes:

Bethune Cookman transfer Marquavis Myers is the younger brother of former SEU cornerback Mark Myers.

Loobert Denlus’ Defensive Coordinator Sam Dollar and Defensive Backs Coach Steve Edwards played for Barefield at Evangel University.

Tez Watts’ high school coach, Tim Sanders was a college roommate of Barefield’s at Troy.

Faulkner transfer Jacob McCrary had nine catches for 212 yards and two touchdowns against SEU in 2017.

Warner transfer Eugene Witherspoon made four catches for 63 yards with a go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter of the triple overtime game at Victory Field in 2016.
