LAKELAND, Fla. – For the second consecutive week, the Southeastern University men’s and receiving votes women’s programs have swept Sun Conference weekly honors. Senior Hugo Pires was named The Sun Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while freshman Priscila Baptista earned the distinction of being the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Pires earned the weekly award for the second-straight week. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native won each match he had during the trip to Tennessee last weekend, which included dropping just a single game in singles play. His 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles was responsible for half of his team’s points against No. 14 Cumberland.
Baptista scored two points to help the Fire upset No. 13 Cumberland on Friday. She helped get a point with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, then was the highest positioned singles player to come away with a win at No. 4 to help SEU edge the Phoenix 5-4. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native won all three of her singles matches in Tennessee in straight sets.
Both teams are back in Sun Conference action this Wednesday with a pivotal match against the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners. Match time at the Beerman Family Tennis Complex is slated for 11:30 a.m.
