PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.—A solid start by the Southeastern University women’s golf team has it in third place following the first round of The Sun Conference Championship, hosted at PGA National’s Fazio Course.
The Fire posted a team score of 315, 13 shots behind top-ranked Keiser for second place.
Junior Ana Uribe sits in a tie for sixth with a four-over par round of 76. Uribe birdied the 345-yard par 4 third and the 455-yard par 5 17th, battling intermitted rain on the back nine.
Brooke Wetzel is two shots behind Uribe in a tie for 11th after shooting 78 in the first round. The sophomore made a long putt to birdie the par 4 sixth, and also birdied the par 4 11th.
Ashlynn Joyner is tied for 14th with an eight-over 80 in the first round, but pared six holes on the back nine during the rain.
After going six over on the front nine, Valentina Espinosa fought back and carded an 81 to reach a tie for 20th. She played the last six holes even. Brianna Farrell rounded out the roster with an 82 in the first round as is tied for 23rd. Farrell birdied the second, and tapped in for birdie on the par 3 16th.
The Fire will be paired with the top two teams in the nation during the second round, starting at 10:27 Monday morning.
