LAKELAND, Fla.—A fast start wasn’t enough for Southeastern to continue its five-match winning streak as Lindsey Wilson used a pair of pins at the halfway point to come away with a 29-10 victory.
Jaaziel Santana, ranked 20th at 125, got the Fire started with a 6-4 win over No. 9 Cagen Wallace. An escape to start the second and a takedown put Santana up 4-2 to start the final two minutes.
“He’s a fighter, good things happen when you get to the leg,” said coach Javier Maldonado. “You give yourself a chance to win a match when you get after it.”
After giving up an escape in the third, he battled back to get a takedown to seal the victory.
“Everytime I wrestle one of my teammates, or I watch them wrestle, I learn from them and use it on the mat,” said Santana. “I just focused on what Coach Javi told me throughout the match and we had a game plan going in an executed it.”
Following a pair of decision losses, Jake Watters picked up a major with a 10-2 win to give the Fire a 7-6 lead. After five matches, Lindsey Wilson held a 8-7 lead.
The Blue Raiders came on strong after the intermission getting two first period falls to go up 13 points.
Jason Davis, ranked 13th at 184, came away with a 10-4 decision over No. 8 Lucas Miozza, scoring four takedowns, an escape to start the second period, and a riding time bonus.
“We knew every match was going to be tough,” said Maldonado. “They have 10 strong guys and we are getting there.”
The Fire return to action on January 4 at the NWCA National Duals in Louisville.
