Goshen Sneaks By RV Taylor in Road Doubleheader

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Trojans slammed three home runs on Tuesday but ultimately came up one run short in both games.

Nabbing his first start of the season, Noah Huseman opened game one by striking out the side in the first inning. The sophomore’s 21-inning scoreless streak came to an end in the second frame, as Goshen (12-17, 6-6 CL) rallied for a 2-0 edge.

TU (24-11, 4-7 CL) evened the game at two runs in the top of the third inning. The Trojans posted three-consecutive singles, plating a pair, including Nick Rusche who leads the team with 29 runs scored on the season.

Goshen broke the tie in the fifth with a solo home run. The 3-2 score would hold through the seventh and final inning, giving the Maple Leafs the win in game one.

Three different TU pitchers delivered two innings of work in the first contest, combining for nine strikeouts.

Taylor played from behind for the majority of game two, as the host school scored six runs in the first three innings.

Conner Crawford made a strong comeback effort, knocking his first two career homers for five RBI. A three-run shot in the fourth and a two-run home run in the eighth from the freshman kept the team within range.

Down one heading into the ninth, TJ Bass began the inning with TU’s third home run of the afternoon and his third homer of the season. The clutch hit tied the game at seven apiece.

The Maple Leafs put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth, plating the winning run to finalize an 8-7 Goshen victory.

Brett Lawson picked up three hits in game two, marking his sixth multi-hit game of the season, while going four-for-seven at the plate on the day.

RV Taylor will return to action at home with a weekend series against Spring Arbor (13-19, 6-6 CL) beginning on Friday at 4:00 pm.
