“Promoting education based athletics in Indiana”
Troy Lewis, a former Indiana Mr. Basketball, was quoted in the Indianapolis Star this past week talking about the importance of never taking any game for granted or blaming a coach for a loss during the NCAA basketball tournament.
“No lead is ever safe. At the end of the day, it’s all about execution. That’s why I never, ever, blame the coaches for anything because I know as a player, I had the control.” (Lewis has been an assistant high school coach the last six years)
I encourage all high school student-athletes to take the same approach. Too many times, regardless of the sport, players, parents, and the general fan base would rather blame the coach for a tough loss during the tournament run instead of holding the athletes accountable, as well.
While great coaches may have some influence in those tough games, it’s really the players that determine the outcome. Don’t be afraid to hold yourself accountable, win or lose. It’s the right thing to do!
