 Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue Claim Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors

Illinois’ Cockburn earns his sixth honor of the season

 

Players of the Week

Daniel Oturu, Minnesota

C – So. – 6-10 – Woodbury, Minn. – Cretin-Derham Hall – Major: Sports Management

  • Set a new career high with 30 points and seven rebounds in a 75-67 victory versus No. 19 Michigan on Sunday
  • Posted his 10th double-double of the year with 22 points and 10 rebounds at No. 8 Michigan State
  • Has now scored 20 or more points nine times this season
  • Averaged 26 points and 8.5 rebounds for the Gophers over the week
  • Scored 16 of Minnesota’s 19 points in the first 15 minutes of the first half, finished the first half 9-for-12 from the floor versus the Wolverines
  • Earns the second Player of the Week accolade of his career; claimed Freshman of the Week twice in 2018-19

Trevion Williams, Purdue

F – So. – 6-9 – Chicago, Ill. – Henry Ford Academy (Mich.) – Major: Organizational Leadership

  • Recorded career highs in points (36) and rebounds (20) versus Michigan, becoming the first Purdue player since Bob Ford (36 points, 20 rebounds on Feb. 16, 1971, vs. Minnesota) to have a 35-point and 20-rebound game
  • Posted the first 35-point and 20-rebound game in college basketball this season and becomes the first player since 2010-11 to have a 35-20 game with no turnovers
  • The performance marked his fourth double-double in the last seven games
  • Led Purdue with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists (leader in all categories) in Purdue’s 71-42 win over No. 8 Michigan State
  • Averaged 26.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two Purdue games this week … shot 23-of-42 from the field in the two games
  • Earns the first Player of the Week accolade of his career

Freshman of the Week

Kofi Cockburn, Illinois

C – Fr. – 7-0 – Kingston, Jamaica – Oak Hill Academy (Va.) – Major: General Studies

  • Recorded a double-double on the week, averaging 13.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in a pair of Illini wins
  • Scored 15 points on 6-of-9 from the field and grabbed a team-high six rebounds in win at Wisconsin
  • Helped the Illini storm back from a six-point deficit to claim a 71-70 victory, snapping a 15-game losing streak against the Badgers and earning their first victory in Madison in 10 years
  • Recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and game-high and career-high tying 17 rebounds in comeback win over Rutgers
  • 17 boards tied his school single-game freshman rebound record, a mark which he first set on Nov. 20
  • Set the Illinois freshman record for double-doubles in a season, tallying his seventh against the Scarlet Knights in 17 games, breaking the previous Illini freshman record of six double-doubles that had stood since the 1982-83 season
  • Earns the sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of his career
  • Becomes the first Illinois player in Big Ten history to earn Freshman of the Week six times in one season
