Big Days from Paulsson-Glantz and Schmidt Push No. 3 Southeastern Past Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla.- The No. 3 Southeastern University women’s basketball team opened up Sun Conference play in the similarly dominant fashion that it concluded conference action in 2017-18. The Fire downed the Webber International University Warriors 88-62 in their TSC opener, marking the third consecutive conference opener won by SEU.

The win pushed Southeastern’s regular season win streak to 56 games and win streak versus Sun Conference opponents to 43.

The Fire came out feisty on defense, forcing nine turnovers in the first quarter, scoring 11 of their 15 first quarter points of takeaways.

Senior forward Elsa Paulsson-Glantz had her best game in an SEU uniform, totaling 16 of her game-high 29 points in the first half. Paulsson-Glantz also recorded five points and five steals.

Both teams shot sub-40% from the field in the first half. However, the Fire held the upper hand, holding the Warriors to 30.6% from the field, including 16.7% from three-point range.

SEU took a 32-26 lead over WIU into the half.

The Fire pounced on the Warriors in the second half, outscoring Webber International 28-8 to open up the third quarter.

“Our interior presence was key to how we played out of the half. Our post presence wasn’t as strong in Indiana as it was tonight and we needed that after we didn’t shoot well in the first half,” shared head coach Tim Hays.

Junior center Marlena Schmidt exploded in the third period, scoring `16 points in the 10-minute span. Schmidt totaled 20 of her 25 career-high points in the second half, also hauling in 10 rebounds to posting her second career double-double.

The Warriors were unable to cut the deficit to any less than 24 in the fourth quarter.

Southeastern opens up play at home this Saturday versus Warner University. The Fire take on the Royals in The Furnace at 2 p.m.
