IRISH HAVE ANOTHER HORRIFIC ENDING AFTER PROMISING START AS NO. 9 BUCKEYES COMPLETE HOCKEY SWEEP WITH ANOTHER 5-1 VICTORY

By JOHN FINERAN

SOUTH BEND – Nothing, it seems, can bring the slumping Notre Dame hockey team out of its doldrums this season.

Not their lucky gold pants, which were riding a two-game winning streak. Not singer Jim Cornelison’s stirring rendition of the National Anthem on Chicago Blackhawks Night. Not the second largest sellout crowd of the season (5,212) in the Compton Family Ice Arena. Not even a 12-3 barrage of shots in the first 7:05 the game directed at Ohio State goaltender Logan Terness, who finished with 41 saves.

Nothing. This 2024-25 season, the last of Irish coach Jeff Jackson’s Hall of Fame career when it ends, seemingly has become an episode of “The Twilight Zone.”

“We just find a way (to lose),” Jackson said after his team couldn’t use the momentum of the game’s opening goal by sophomore center Danny Nelson and its first-period shot domination against the ninth-ranked Buckeyes, who like Friday tied the game late in the first period and then scored twice in each of the remaining periods for a 5-1 Big Ten Conference victory.

The triumph completed a season four-game sweep of Notre Dame by coach Steve Rohlik’s Buckeyes, who improved to 18-8-2 overall and moved to 11-6-1 in the Big Ten good for 34 points and third place. Notre Dame, meanwhile, fell to 9-18-1 overall and deeper into the Big Ten cellar with their 3-14-1 league mark for 11 points, nine behind sixth-place Penn State, which will host the Irish next weekend following its 6-2 victory to complete a series sweep at slumping Wisconsin.

Notre Dame got an early power-play opportunity when Ohio State’s Jake Rozzi went off for hooking at 3:56. The Irish forced Terness to make seven saves during the two minutes, three of them against Danny Nelson before the penalty expired. Then Terness denied Nelson again at 7:05 before the sophomore center finally tallied his team-leading 11th goal of the season at 9:50 off feeds from fellow classmates Brennan Ali and Paul Fischer.

“I thought we were playing pretty well and then we got a penalty at the end of the first,” Jackson continued. The kneeing penalty against Irish defenseman Zack Plucinski at 18:00 was followed 18 seconds later by coincidental roughing-after-the-whistle penalties against Ohio State’s Max Montes and Notre Dame’s Ryan Helliwell. Then the Buckeyes tied it at 18:49 when Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored his 13th goal of the season with a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle past screened Irish freshman goaltender Nicholas Kempf.

“We had a lot of good chances in the first; we needed to bury a few of them and we didn’t,” Jackson lamented. “It’s hard to chase the game. It’s a lot easier when you play with the lead.”

Kempf, who finished with 25 saves, kept it 1-1 when he denied a breakaway attempt by Max Montes at 5:32 and then an unguarded Davis Burnside in the mid-slot area at 8:14 as the Irish started to come undone defensively.

A little more than a minute later, Notre Dame defenseman Axel Kumlin lost the handle on the puck near blueline in the offensive zone, allowing Sam Deckhut to steal the puck and skate in alone of Kempf. The Irish goaltender went down to stop Deckhut’s shot, but the puck squeezed past his legs and slowly trickled toward the goal line and eventually into the net which became dislodged when Deckhut slammed into the Irish netminder.

A referee waved off the goal during a melee which ensued, but after order was restored, a long video revealed that it was indeed a goal for Deckhut, who gave his teammates a 2-1 lead and then proceeded to the penalty box for charging into the goaltender at 9:37.

“That turnover at the blueline changed the whole game,” Jackson said.

Ohio State later made it 3-1 at 17:31 of the second period when Fontaine got a loose puck off a corner scrum, backhanded a pass across the ice to defenseman Chris Able who then found David Burnside all alone in the slot for a 10-footer which beat Kempf.

Early in the third period, Ohio State center Riley Thompson interfered with Irish center Cole Knuble in front of the Buckeyes’ bench, and Knuble was hit in the head by teammate Henry Nelson’s skate as he went down to the ice. Trainer Kevin Ricks came onto the ice to tend to Knuble, who skated gingerly to the bench but later came back to take a few shifts.

“There probably should have been a penalty called – it was blatant interference, he (Thompson) wasn’t anywhere near the puck,” Jackson said.

Instead, the Buckeyes got a pair of insurance goals from their blueline corps. First backpedaling defenseman Nathan McBrayer’s blueline blast clanged into the net behind Kempf at 9:04. Then Burnside, who had a three-point night, skated unmolested through five Irish players before dealing the puck off to defenseman William Smith, whose goal beat Kempf at 11:02.
