Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week (8/28): Katie Baer

Freshman made 17 saves (including PK) in first two matches

GOSHEN, Ind. — Freshman goalkeeper Katie Baer of the Goshen College women’s soccer team has been named the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week of August 21-27.

Baer, a product of Washington High School in Villa Ridge, Missouri, faced 19 saves and made 17 shots in the team’s two matches last week, a 1-1 draw at Providence Christian College and a 1-0 loss to Soka University. Her eight stops in the Soka match included a pair of diving efforts, most memorably a penalty-kick save with less than eight minutes remaining.

A mathematics major, Baer currently ranks second in the Crossroads League with 8.5 saves per game and fourth with 0.90 goals allowed per 90 minutes.

Following the team’s return from California and the beginning of classes on Tuesday, Goshen opens its home schedule at 2 p.m. Saturday against Cleary University.

The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
