MATT’S MATCHUPS HOOPS 17-18 – NO. 14

I continued my late-season surge by going 31-3 (91 percent) last week. Heading into the final week of the regular season, my overall record is 222-65, which bumps me up to 77 percent for the year.

FEBRUARY 19

Central Noble (10-9) at Jimtown (5-15): The Jimmies claimed a 50-40 win over Central Noble a year ago. Ridley Scott tallied 16 points in the Cougars’ 63-52 win over Lakeland. Clay Campbell netted six points in Jimtown’s 50-38 win over Clay. Matt’s pick: Central Noble 42, Jimtown 39.

Mishawaka (12-7, 7-3 NIC) at Adams (9-11, 4-6 NIC): The Eagles claimed an 82-57 win over Mishawaka a year ago. Tre Jeffries scored nine points in the Cavemen’s 59-40 victory over Glenn. Charles Worsham managed just two points in Adams’ 69-52 loss at Riley. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 59, Adams 58.

FEBRUARY 20

Fairfield (17-4) at Northridge (11-9): The Raiders slipped past Fairfield, 47-45, a season ago. Peyton Feldoe tallied 13 points in the Falcons’ 63-43 win over Churubusco. Braden Tadeo had three points in Northridge’s 63-48 win over Concord. Matt’s pick: Fairfield 57, Northridge 53.

Goshen (8-12) at West Noble (10-10): The RedHawks posted a 71-59 win against West Noble last season. Porter Revoir netted five points in Goshen’s 66-45 win over LaPorte. David Flores had 10 points in the Chargers’ 54-42 loss to Angola. Matt’s pick: Goshen 51, West Noble 47.

Jimtown (5-16, 2-9 NIC) at Penn (12-8, 6-5 NIC): The Kingsmen crowned Jimtown, 46-27, last year. Austin Pearison accounted for 23 points in the Jimmies’ 46-45 loss to Central Noble. Noah Krathwohl chipped in four points in Penn’s 69-45 win over Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Penn 61, Jimtown 45.

Marian (16-3) at Edwardsburg (4-11): Coley Quinn scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Knights in their 87-86 four-overtime victory over Penn. Jack Knoll contributed 13 points for the Michigan-based Eddies in a 66-44 win over Berrien Springs. Matt’s pick: Marian 63, Edwardsburg 48.

Mishawaka (12-8) at Concord (7-12): The Cavemen slipped past Concord, 48-44, in their last meeting. Dylan Hall’s 20 points were not for Mishawaka in a 60-53 loss at Adams.  Matt Auger recorded nine points for the Minutemen against Northridge. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 58, Concord 54.

New Prairie (9-10, 3-7 NIC) at Elkhart Central (8-12, 4-7 NIC): The Cougars dropped a 53-50 decision to Elkhart Central a year ago. Dawson Kegley managed just two points in New Prairie’s 78-25 loss to No. 2 (Class 4A) Riley. Devon Jackson came up with two points in the Blazers’ 58-43 loss at Penn. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 62, New Prairie 56.

Saint Joseph (14-6) at Plymouth (12-9): The Indians cruised to a 57-44 win over Plymouth last season. Ben Terry finished with two points in Saint Joe’s 69-64 win over Elkhart Memorial. Tim Tremaine ended up with three points for the Pilgrims against Penn. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 55, Plymouth 50.

FEBRUARY 21

Marian (17-3, 8-2 NIC) at Clay (2-18, 0-11 NIC): The Knights escaped with a 64-58 win over Clay last year. Kyron King came up with 10 points in Marian’s 61-41 win at Edwardsburg. Robert Allen tallied nine points for the Colonials against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Marian 70, Clay 56.

FEBRUARY 22

Triton (6-13) at Bremen (4-16): The Lions claimed a 47-45 win over Triton on January 16 in the TCU Bi-County Tournament. Beau Hepler scored 14 points in the Trojans’ 55-47 loss at Glenn. Bryce Sterling mustered only two points in Bremen’s 43-33 loss to New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Triton 41, Bremen 40.

FEBRUARY 23

Adams (10-11, 5-6 NIC) at New Prairie (9-11, 3-8 NIC): The Eagles soared to 55-47 win over New Prairie a year ago. Rico Swanson netted 14 points for Adams against Mishawaka. Chase Ketterer recorded 11 points for the Cougars in a 52-46 loss to Elkhart Central. Matt’s pick: Adams 66, New Prairie 55.

Bremen (5-16) at Culver (3-18): The Cavaliers were a 60-57 winner over Bremen last year. Brooks Feldman had 16 points for the Lions in their 43-41 win over Triton. R.T. Roberts came up with 17 points in Culver’s 52-40 loss to LaCrosse. Matt’s pick: Bremen 37, Culver 34.

Concord (7-13) at Westview (22-1): The No. 2 (Class 2A) Warriors went to overtime to past a 53-47 victory over Concord a season ago. Ethan Cain managed just five points for the Minutemen in their 59-52 loss to Mishawaka. Elijah Hales recorded 22 points in Westview’s 62-40 win over Fremont. Matt’s pick: Westview 60, Concord 54.

East Noble (19-2) at Elkhart Memorial (10-11): The No. 10 (Class 4A) Knights slipped past Elkhart Memorial, 53-52, last season. Ali Ali racked up 19 points in East Noble’s 53-46 loss to Angola. Jose Soto contributed nine points for the Chargers in their 62-58 win over Clay. Matt’s pick: East Noble 58, Elkhart Memorial 57.

Glenn (13-7 (7-4 NIC) at Riley (21-0, 11-0 NIC): The Falcons dropped a 70-63 decision to No. 2 (Class 4A) Riley in their last meeting. Evan Dreibelbeis finished with nine points for Glenn against Triton. Harrington Greer came up with nine points for the Wildcats against New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Riley 75, Glenn 58.

Marian (18-3, 9-2 NIC) at Washington (15-7, 8-3 NIC): The Knights crowned Washington, 61-51, last year.  Jake Bishop ended up with three points for Marian against Edwardsburg. Tony Stuckey came up with five points in the Panthers’ 86-69 win against Lighthouse CPA. Matt’s pick: Marian 73, Washington 70.

Marquette Catholic (10-13) at Goshen (9-12): This marks the first meeting between the Blazers and Goshen on the hardwood. Colin Kenney tallied 27 points for Marquette Catholic in 58-46 win over Lake Central. Joe Good managed seven points in the RedHawks’ 66-32 win over West Noble. Matt’s pick: Marquette Catholic 51, Goshen 49.

Merrillville (16-7) at Penn (13-8): The Pirates edged Penn, 49-44, a season ago. Rob Sanders scored 14 points for Merrillville in a 79-66 win over Michigan City. Noah Applegate racked up 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Kingsmen in their 60-37 win over Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 69, Penn 64.

Northridge (11-10) at DeKalb (10-11): The Raiders posted a 53-47 win over DeKalb last season. Camden Knepp mustered only two points in Northridge’s 57-48 loss to Fairfield. Logan Kruse finished with 12 points in the Barons’ 57-42 loss to Homestead. Matt’s pick: Northridge 53, DeKalb 47.

Saint Joseph (14-7, 9-2 NIC) at Mishawaka (13-8, 7-4 NIC): The Indians claimed a 53-50 victory against Mishawaka a year ago. Hunter West’s 14 points were not enough for Saint Joe in a 60-53 double overtime loss at Plymouth. Sam Shively recorded nine points for Mishawaka against Concord. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 61, Mishawaka 59.

Tippecanoe Valley (5-16) at Wawasee (5-16): The Warriors eliminated Tippecanoe Valley from last year’s state tournament with a 41-37 victory. Alex Morrison finished with 11 points in the Vikings’ 49-29 win over Triton. Jarius Boyer posted 11 points in Wawasee’s 64-51 loss to East Noble. Matt’s pick: Wawasee 43, Tippecanoe Valley 40.

Valparaiso (16-5) at Clay (2-19): The Vikings clubbed Clay, 67-54, last year. Brandon Newman poured in 45 points in Valparaiso’s 70-66 double overtime win at Concord. Anthony Neal contributed six points for the Colonials against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 65, Clay 50.

Warsaw (11-10) at Carroll (Fort Wayne) (17-3): The Chargers marched their way to 44-39 win over Warsaw last season. Brian Elliott paced the Tigers with 15 points in a 53-44 loss to Carmel. Riley Perlich managed 17 points in Carroll’s 62-54 win against North Central (Indianapolis). Matt’s pick: Carroll 44, Warsaw 41.

FEBRUARY 24

GIRLS STATE FINALS

Vincennes Rivet (28-2) vs. Marquette Catholic (26-2) (Class 1A): Emma Nolan tallied 22 points for the top-ranked Blazers in their 58-18 victory over Tri-Central. Tia Tolbert netted 28 points in the No. 2 Patriots’ 77-68 win against No. 3 Tindley. Matt’s pick: Marquette Catholic 70, Vincennes Rivet 62.

Winchester (26-2) vs. Central Noble (22-5) (Class 2A): Madeline Lawrence poured in 24 points for the No. 4 Golden Falcons in a 49-47 win over No. 6 Paoli. Meleah Leatherman scored 21 points for the No. 9 Cougars in their 52-44 victory against Frankton. Matt’s pick: Winchester 58, Central Noble 50.

Greensburg (23-3) vs. Northwestern (28-1) (Class 3A): Kyra Whitaker recorded 21 points as the No. 2 Pirates downed No. 7 Danville, 61-52. Madison Layden racked up 28 points as the top-ranked Cougars cruised to a 70-43 victory over No. 3 Fairfield. Matt’s pick: Northwestern 67, Greensburg 56.

Warren Central (19-7) vs. Zionsville (22-5) (Class 4A): The No. 10 Eagles claimed a 52-44 win over Warren Central on January 16. Shalia Beeler finished with 25 points in the Warriors’ 66-55 victory over Bedford North Lawrence. Megan Sheridan contributed 17 points in Zionsville’s 53-45 win over No. 6 Penn. Matt’s pick: Zionsville 55, Warren Central 54.
