The 2019 part of the schedule ended on a sour note as I went 14-8 (64 percent) last week. Heading into the first part of 2020, my overall record is 80-37, which has me at 68 percent for the season.


Norwell (8-0) at Marian (2-2): The Knights crowned Norwell, 58-32, a year ago. Will Geiger scored 14 points in the Knights; 60-35 win over South Adams. Sam Spurgeon netted 11 points in Marian’s 54-38 win over Glenn. Matt’s pick: Norwell 64, Marian 60.

Fort Wayne South (3-2) at Marian (2-2): The Archers and Marian are meeting for the first time on the basketball court. Kameron Mitchell tallied 19 points in Fort Wayne South’s 60-50 loss to Carroll (Fort Wayne). Michael Baughman had six points for the Knights against Glenn. Matt’s pick: Marian 55, Fort Wayne South 49.


Garrett (1-7) at Wawasee (4-3): The Warriors posted a 63-51 win over Garrett last season. Jarrett Bailey finished with 14 points in the Railroaders’ 64-41 loss to Bluffton. Kameron Salazar came up with one point in Wawasee’s 63-56 win over Central Noble. Matt’s pick: Wawasee 53, Garrett 41.

Northridge (5-4) at East Noble (1-3): The Raiders earned a 52-47 victory against East Noble a season ago. Trevor Brown chipped in three points in Northridge’s 67-59 loss at Noblesville. Chris Hood contributed five points in the Knights’ 62-30 win over Fairfield. Matt’s pick: Northridge 61, East Noble 57.

NorthWood (7-2) at Clay (2-6): The Panthers clawed past Clay, 64-39, last year. Trent Edwards finished with 21 points in NorthWood’s 62-42 win over Columbia City. Christian Love came up with six points in the Colonials’ 75-61 loss to Glenn. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 70. Clay 59.

Plymouth (3-5) vs. Knox (5-2) (Plymouth Tournament): The Pilgrims slipped past Knox, 48-47, during the 2016-17 season. Joe Barron;s two points were not enough in Plymouth’s 55-36 loss to Riley. Cade Short racked up 14 points in the Redskins’ 55-47 win over Caston. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 44, Knox 41.

Valparaiso (6-3) at Warsaw (7-1): The Vikings suffered a 57-43 loss to Warsaw during the 2001-02 campaign. C.J. Opperman had eight points in Valparaiso’s 65-42 loss to Franklin Central. Connor Lenox managed four points in the Tigers; 57-38 win over Kokomo. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 66, Valparaiso 63.

Whitko (2-3) vs. Jimtown (5-2) (Plymouth Tournament): The Jimmies cruised to a 65-40 win over Whitko in the 2014-15 season. Drake Lewis registered 12 points in the Wildcats’ 53-48 win over Tippecanoe Valley. Preston Phillips racked up 15 points in Jimtown’s 51-26 win over Fairfield. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 48, Whitko 43,

Jimtown (6-2) vs. Knox (6-1): Matt’s pick: Jimtown 43, Knox 40.

Lighthouse CPA (2-5) at Wawasee (5-3): Matt’s pick: Wawasee 52, Lighthouse CPA 50.

Whitko (2-4) at Plymouth (3-6): Matt’s pick: Plymouth 51, Whitko 49.


Concord (0-6) at East Noble (2-3): The Knights edged Concord, 44-43, in the 2001 sectional opener.  Payton Fish netted four points for the Minutemen in their 62-50 loss to Elkhart Memorial. Nate Dickson contributed 20 points in East Noble’s 68-58 win against Northridge. Matt’s pick: East Noble 66, Concord 50.

Logansport (4-5) at Mishawaka (3-3): The Cavemen squeezed past Logansport, 61-60, during the 1973-74 campaign.  Noah Lange chipped in 16 points in the Berries’ 66-51 loss to LaPorte. Caleb Williams ended up with seven points in Mishawaka’s 56-34 win over Edwardsburg. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 60, Logansport 54.

Riley (3-4) at Kalamazoo Central (3-2): The Maroon Giants and Riley are play basketball for the first time. Tieon Autry came up with four points for the Wildcats against Plymouth. Trevon Gunter scored 21 points in Kalamazoo Central’s 68-62 loss to Benton Harbor. Matt’s pick: Kalamazoo Central 80, Riley 77..
