LITTLE ROCK, Ark.—Southeastern University senior defensive end Mike Mitchell has been named a finalist for the 2018 Cliff Harris Award for the top small college defensive player.
Mitchell is one of just 15 finalists from the NAIA, earning Second Team All-American honors from the AFCA as well as the AP.
The Plano, Texas native recorded 17.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks among his 63 total tackles, which was tied for the second-most on the team. He was named the Mid-South Sun Division’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Mitchell is the first finalist in program history for this honor.
The award is named after Cliff Harris, who had just one scholarship offer to Ouachita Baptist, an NAIA school at the time, yet went on to play in five Super Bowls and six Pro Bowls during his career with the Dallas Cowboys.
A winner from the NAIA along with NCAA Division II and III will be selected. The overall winner will be announced on December 24th and will be honored at the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s annual awards banquet on January 10.
