National Record Headlines Carmel’s Fourth Consecutive Championship
Record setting performances in Friday’s prelims set the tone for Carmel’s commanding win in the 81st Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals at the IU Natatorium. The Greyhounds set a new state record for points, racking up 417 to runner-up Franklin Community’s 203.
Friday saw two state record setting performances by the Greyhounds, in the 200-medley relay comprised of sophomore Wyatt Davis, senior Stefano Batista, senior Drew Kibler, and senior Andrew Couchon. The quartet finished at 1:28.00, good for second best in the nation. Kibler then raced to a state and national record of 19.38 in the 50 freestyle, putting Carmel in prime position for Saturday’s finals.
Sophomore Wyatt Davis hauled in two individual state championships, the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, and was a member of the record setting 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Classmate Jacob Mitchell took home the 500 freestyle, and joined his teammates to capture the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay titles.
Zionsville senior Jack Franzman was victorious in the 100 freestyle, making it his second win in three years in the event. Franzman was also the 50 freestyle champ in 2016 and 2017.
Franklin Community was led by junior Jacob Destrampe, who started off the day’s action with a win in the 200 freestyle. Destrampe finished second in the 100 freestyle (44.38), and was a member of the Grizzly Cubs’ 200 and 400 freestyle relays, which each finished second with times of 1:23.48 and 3:04.52, respectively.
On the diving side of things, senior Isaac Khamis capped his high school career by taking his second state diving title with a score of 583.40. Khamis is a four-time medalist for Richmond High School.
This is the fourth straight team state championship for the dominant Greyhounds and head coach Chris Plumb. The second-place finish was the strongest showing in program history for runner-up Franklin Community.

Senior Isaac Khamis of Richmond wins Mental Attitude Award
Senior Isaac Khamis of Richmond High School was recognized following the state championship meet by the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award, named in honor of Herman F. Keller.
Khamis is a four-time state placewinnerr in diving, and two-time state champion. During his freshman and sophomore year, Khamis took third place and second place, respectively. He has also won diving at the conference and sectional level yearly. He was named the captain of the swimming and diving team at Richmond for the 2017-18 season.
Outside of diving, he was a member of the band for three years. He also volunteers his time at the Animal HELP Shelter, and has helped clean parks within his community. Khamis is also part of his church’s youth choir and youth group.
In the realm of academics, he ranks second in his senior class of 287 students. Khamis is also a member of his school’s National Honors Society.
Khamis is the son of Kathy and Michael Khamis of Richmond. After graduating from Richmond High School, he will attend the University of Missouri and dive for the Tigers.
Each year the IHSAA Executive Committee selects a senior who was nominated by his principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. The Committee presented $1,000 to Richmond High School’s general scholarship fund in the name of Khamis.
