LAKELAND, Fla.—The Fire softball team scored two more Sun Conference victories with 5-0 and 4-1 victories over St. Thomas Wednesday afternoon.
Southeastern (36-13, 15-5 TSC) was led in the first game by the fifth shutout of the season by junior pitcher Hannah Bodenhorn, who improved to 15-4 on the season. Bodenhorn allowed four hits, and two walks over seven innings of work, and struck out two.
At the plate, freshman Haleigh Harrell was a perfect 3-for-3, which included an RBI single up the middle in the third inning to give the Fire its first run of the game, scoring Heather Faulk.
Faulk also scored the second run of the game, coming home on a Lauren Watters single to left in the fifth.
In the sixth, Ramsey Sullivan hit her first collegiate home run, clearing the center field wall for a two-run homer.
Ashley Appell improved to 19-7 on the year, pitching five shutout innings. The Fire offense helped her out, getting a two-out RBI single by Brandee Pietrzak off the glove of the third baseman in the bottom of the first to bring in Sam Holcomb, who doubled.
In the third and fourth innings, the Fire took advantage of a first-and-third situation to get runs on double steals, with Harrell taking the plate in the third and Faulk in the fourth.
Watters added an additional run in the fourth with an RBI single to score Kristin Mihalic.
Kiah Ferrell came on to pitch in the sixth with runners at first and second with nobody out, and coaxed a pair of fielder’s choice groundouts, and a fly out to right to end the threat. The lone run of the game scored on a throwing error in the top of the seventh, allowing Ferrell to earn her first save of the season.
The Fire are on the road Saturday to take on USCB.
