PNW Men’s Soccer Beats Lewis for First Win of Season

HAMMOND, Ind. & WESTVILLE, Ind. – A Justin Barragan (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) header in the 58th minute ended up being the difference as the Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team earned their first win of the season Thursday at Dowling Park as they beat the Lewis University Flyers by a final of 2-1.

Barragan also was credited with an assist on the first goal of the night for the Pride when he found Jaime Garcia (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) for the goal in the 52nd minute. The Flyers were able to strike almost immediately after on a Konrad Malikowski strike in the 55th minute.

The first half was absent of scoring, as both sides had their opportunities but were unable to capitalize. After all three goals in the game were scored in an eight-minute span to begin the second half, the game went back to being a defensive struggle.

Freshman goalkeeper Raul Garrido Garcia (Madrid, Spain/Menesiano) earned the first win of his college career as he got the start and played all 90 minutes in goal.

The physicality ramped up in the second half as well, as each side had two players issued yellow cards: Grant Ugarte (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) and Barragan for PNW, while Malinowski and Jesus Ochoa received cards for the Flyers.

Next up, the Black and Gold will travel to Kirksville, Mo. to take on the Truman State Bulldogs Sunday, Sep. 2 at 12 P.M.
