MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Catapulted by a complete game, seven strikeout performance Friday by senior southpaw Lindsie Scholwinski, the No. 13 Southeastern University softball team took game one of a weekend series over the St. Thomas University Bobcats 3-0.
Scholwinski held the Bobcats hitless and had retired 11 straight at the end of the fourth frame. With the win, she improved to 3-0 all-time in her SEU career versus STU with three complete game shutouts.
After mustering just three hits at the plate through the first four innings, the SEU offense had a productive top of the fifth, scoring three runs on three base hits. A single up the middle from senior centerfielder Cheyenne Blaha scored Sammy Jacobson and Sydnie Malloy.
Junior catcher Brandee Pietrzak picked up her team leading 31st RBI of the season later that inning with a sac fly to deep left field that brought Sam Holcomb across the plate and gave the Fire a 3-0 lead.
The Bobcats brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 7th. However, Scholwinski doused the hopes of a STU rally with her seventh strikeout of the contest to end the game.
With Warner’s 2-1 loss to South Carolina Beaufort earlier today, the Fire and the Royals are in a first place tie in the Sun Conference with Warner holding the tiebreaker advantage.
Southeastern needs a sweep versus St. Thomas Saturday and the Sand Sharks to claim at least one victory over Warner in order to earn the conference regular season title.
Game times for the Fire’s doubleheader Saturday versus the Bobcats are set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
