Trojans Drop High-Scoring Tilt to Huntington

UPLAND, Ind. – In a game that featured 22 lead changes and six ties with both sides shooting over 50.0 percent from the field, and 40.0 percent from deep, it was the visiting Foresters of Huntington (10-11, 2-7 CL) that pulled out the 88-85 victory.

Both offenses were efficient throughout, with Huntington shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and 12-of-25 from beyond the arc, while only committing six turnovers. Taylor countered with a 51.7-percent rate overall and a 12-of-27 showing from deep with just seven turnovers.

HU had only three players record over six points, but that trio provided 75 points on 63.4-percents shooting, while the Trojans had five players account for 81 of the squad’s 85 points on the night.

Mason Degenkolb led that group with 25 points on nine-of-17 shooting to climb one spot into ninth on TU’s all-time scoring lists with 1,718 career points. Ryan Robinson followed with 20 points and four assists, while CJ Penha added 17 points with seven makes in nine shots.

Vincent Miranda also reached double figures off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds and Jason Hubbard finished with nine points, seven rebounds and two more blocked shots.

The game was contested throughout, with no lead passing five points in the opening 20 minutes. HU took a 45-40 lead to the break and finally opened a gap of six at 48-42 in the early moments of the second stanza.

A 9-2 spurt from Taylor gave the Purple and Gold a 51-50 lead and TU again held a one-point lead as late as 70-69 on a Degenkolb basket with 5:47 remaining.

The Foresters rattled off the game’s next seven points to reclaim a six-point cushion and later opened an 83-76 spread with 94 seconds to play.

Degenkolb brought Taylor back on a three and a pair of free throws to draw TU within 83-81 at the 1:13 mark and added another bucket to close to 86-83 with 30 ticks to play but the Trojans could not get the stops they needed down the stretch against the hot HU offense and suffered the 88-85 setback.

Taylor (11-10, 3-6 CL) will begin the second half of the Crossroads League schedule on Saturday, when it goes for a season sweep of RV Spring Arbor (13-8, 4-5 CL). The game is set for a 3:00 pm start inside Odle Arena.
