Taylor Remains Undefeated After Sweep of Mount Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The historic start for the Purple and Gold keeps getting better and better.

Taylor swept its fifth consecutive Crossroads League opponent, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene (10-8, 5-3 CL), 10-2 (6) and 7-6. The Trojans remained perfect in league play, with 11 wins in as many games.

Like many times this season, the Trojans put on an offensive show against their opponents. For the seventh time this season and fifth time in league play, TU won via mercy-rule. After two scoreless innings in game one, Taylor put up 10 runs in the last four innings and 14 hits overall.

At the end of game one of the doubleheader with Mount Vernon Nazarene, the Trojans had six-consecutive games with at least one home run. Game one featured a home run from Taylor Wilson, Hannah Castor and Erin Cozad.

Jessica Doctor (7-3) gave up one run on four hits over the course of five innings for the Trojans. The duo of Doctor and Darby Shaw gave up seven hits and held the Cougars to a .292 batting average.

In game two, the Trojans found themselves in a rare late deficit in the first four innings. With time closing in on Taylor, TU scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to hold a 5-3 advantage against the host team.

MVNU answered with three runs, taking back the lead 6-5 in the fifth inning.

Cassy Lewis pitched in the last three innings for the Trojans, only giving up two hits. Lewis picked up her second win in the pitchers’ circle for TU.

TU held the Cougars to zero runs in the last two innings, while posting two of their own to win the game, 7-6.

Maddi Evans scored the game tying run for TU off of Kara Tucker’s ground out.

Cozad’s single to left field brought in Courtney Moriarty for the game winning run.

The Trojans’ offense scored seven runs in 12 hits in game two.

RV Taylor (19-4, 11-0 CL) will travel to No.11 Indiana Wesleyan (25-8, 10-3 CL) on Friday. Game one will begin at 4:00 pm. The next time the Trojans are at Gudakunst Field will be on April 9, against IWU with the first pitch starting at 4:00 pm.
