Taylor Stifles Goshen, Earns 10th Sweep of the Season

UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor University softball team topped Goshen twice on Saturday, winning 5-1 in game one and 8-0 in five innings in the second outing, as Courtney Moriarty and Hannah Robbins held the Maple Leafs to seven hits and a lone run over the course of the afternoon.

Goshen’s lone run of the day came on a home run in the third inning of the first contest, which put GC in front, 1-0.

TU put three runs on the board in the following half-inning to take a 3-1 lead and tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth to make the final tally.

Moriarty (8-5) scattered five hits and allowed the one run on the homer, while striking out seven batters in seven innings of work in the circle for the Purple and Gold. The sophomore aided her own cause by driving in two runs at the plate.

The Trojans took complete control of game two, as TU scored three in the opening frame and never looked back in run-ruling the Maple Leafs (9-21, 6-18 CL).

Robbins (11-3) threw five outstanding innings, allowing just two baserunners, with neither one reaching second base, while fanning seven batters. The senior retired the final 12 Goshen hitters she faced to give the Trojans the five-inning, 8-0 victory.

Anna Gunderson registered four hits on the day, including two doubles in game two, while scoring three runs and driving in three more. Alex Lovelace, Cassie Kuizin and Hannah Castor each posted three-hit outings, with Kuizin crossing home plate three times and Lovelace adding two more runs to the cause.

Taylor (27-12, 19-5 CL) will return to action on Tuesday at Huntington, as the team travels to take on the Foresters (19-15-1, 14-11 CL) at 3:00 pm.
