TROJANS SPLIT ON FINAL DAY OF IWU TOURNAMENT

 

MARION, Ind. – The Taylor volleyball team split a pair of contests on Saturday during the final day of action at the Indiana Wesleyan Tournament.

 

The Trojans fell in the first game of the day to 22nd-ranked Lourdes (25-15, 25-22, 25-21) before closing out the weekend with a four-set victory over IU East (25-12, 27-29, 25-13, 25-6) to improve to 6-3 on the season.

 

A day after reaching her 1,000th career kill, TU senior Becca Gerig once again paced the Trojan attack with 18 kills in the two contests combined. Gerig tallied four kills in the Trojans’ loss to Lourdes then added 14 kills in TU’s victory over IU East.

 

Junior Haley Harrell orchestrated the Taylor attack with 16 assists against Lourdes and 34 assists against IU East. Sophomore Samantha Korn added 31 digs (12 vs. Lourdes and 19 vs. IU East) while Harrell added 16 digs and Laura Craig chipped in 15 digs against IU East.

 

The Taylor offense sputtered in the loss to Lourdes with a .046 hitting percentage but found a better rhythm in the victory over IU East with a hitting percentage of .179.

 

Next up for Taylor will be the home opener on Wednesday night when the Trojans host Crossroads League foe Huntington at 7:00 pm.
