Trojans Wrap Up Crossroads League Play with Road Win
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Taylor baseball squad saw the end of its regular season Crossroads League schedule on Saturday, grabbing its third-straight win. The Trojans logged a 5-1 victory over Saint Francis in seven innings, as the contest was cut short due to rainy and wet conditions.
Taylor (35-16, 15-12 CL) completed the season sweep of Saint Francis (13-40, 7-20 CL) on Saturday, as the team holds the fifth seed for the Crossroads League Tournament next week.
The TU offense took advantage of wild pitching from the Cougars to create action on the base paths. Throughout the contest, the Trojans drew three walks and six hit by pitches, leading to three of Taylor’s runs.
Carrying a one-run edge into the sixth, the visiting Trojans utilized a rally to build a gap on the scoreboard. Josh Lane moved in the first run of the frame with a sacrifice fly, before a single from Nick Rusche plated another for TU. The third run came across with a double steal, as Rusche nabbed second and Jonathan Foster came home for a 5-1 score that would hold until the wet weather ended the game after the seventh.
The Purple and Gold were solid on the mound as a group, collecting seven strikeouts, while only giving up one walk and four singles. Luke Carlson was credited with the win, tossing the first four innings, while retiring the side in three-consecutive frames.
Taylor will return to action on Monday at home against No. 24 IU Southeast (31-16) at 5:00 pm.
