USF’s Withey, Engst, CCSJ’s Alwine Gain VB Honors

CHICAGO — Strong weekend tournament showings from University of St. Francis’ Brooklyn Withey (Lapeer, Mich.) and Alexis Engst (Bloomington, Ill.) and Calumet College of St. Joseph’s Caitlin Alwine (Goshen, Ind.) have earned the trio Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s volleyball weekly recognition for the seven-day period ending September 2, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Withey, a sophomore middle hitter, was named the CCAC Attacker of the Week after boasting a .319 hitting percentage and averaging 3.0 kills per set over five matches.  Four of those matches came at the Siena Heights University (Mich.) Invitational, where she was named to the all-tournament team.

Withey collected double-digit kill totals in four of the five matches.  She also produced 16 blocks and 2.47 digs per match on the defensive end.

Engst, a freshman, gained CCAC Setter of the Week honors after taking over the duties in a three-set win over Rochester College (Mich.) on Saturday.  She dished out 42 assists leading to the team’s .214 attack percentage in that win, while totaling another 18 in a four-set victory over Huntington University (Ind.), where the Saints hit a season-high .264 one day earlier.

Overall, Engst averaged 5.95 assists per set covering the five matches.

St. Francis went 2-3 on the week.

Alwine, the CCAC Defender of the Week, averaged nearly six digs over four matches, while tallying a .915 reception percentage.  The junior defensive specialist recorded no less than 12 digs in any of the four matches en route to her 5.75 average highlighted by her 25 digs in a three-set loss to Rochester on Saturday.  In the same match, she collected 21 passes without an error.

Calumet St. Joseph dropped each of its first four matches to open its season.

Other Defender Nominees: Alex Ewalt (Olivet Nazarene), Samantha Hockstra (Indiana South Bend), Daphyne Turner (Roosevelt).

Other Setter Nominees: Courtney Lengacher (Indiana South Bend), Mallory Nickelson (Roosevelt), Haley Wiser (Calumet St. Joseph).
