A PENN STATE FINK ASSURES NOTRE DAME OF BIG TEN CELLAR FINISH IN 3-2 NITTANY LIONS VICTORY

 By JOHN FINERAN

Saturday night after host Penn State completed a weekend sweep of its Big Ten hockey series with a 3-2 victory at the Pegula Ice Arena, Notre Dame probably couldn’t wait to put State College, Pa., in its rearview mirror.

If losing their fourth straight league game wasn’t bad enough, assuring the Fighting Irish they would finish the regular season in the cellar of the seven-school conference, the news awaiting them in the locker room after the game wasn’t great, either. Their charter plane was still on the ground in South Bend because of mechanical issues. So retiring coach Jeff Jackson, his staff and players hunkered down at the Pegula Ice Arena to watch the USA-Canada game in the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal while awaiting their charter plane to pick them up early Sunday morning.

The nation’s leading scorer, Penn State sophomore right wing Aiden Fink, ripped home a power-play goal from the faceoff circle to the left of Irish goalie Owen Say at 6:37 of the third period for a 3-1 lead. It would be the eventual game-winner after Notre Dame senior captain Justin Janicke scored his second shorthanded goal of the season at 9:06 to close out the game’s scoring. Fink, who also had an assist, now has 44 points this season with his 22 goals and 22 assists.

Witnessed by the third largest crowd ever – 6,589 – at Pegula, the triumph was the fourth straight victory for coach Guy Gadowsky’s Nittany Lions, the Big Ten’s hottest team of late. They are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games with much of that credit belonging to 6-foot-4 junior goaltender Arsenii Sergeev. The native of Russia, a transfer from Connecticut, finished with 36 saves, 29 of which came in the final two periods as the gritty Irish outshot their hosts 38-28 but only managed two goals.

Graduate right wing Blake Biondi scored his team-high 12th goal of the season at 4:33 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1 after Penn State’s Danny Dzhaniyev opened the scoring at 17:37 of the first period with an assist from Fink.

Nicholas DeGraves put Penn State ahead for good at 15:05 of the second period when he deflected a shot past Say for a 2-1 lead. Then Fink’s goal came 28 seconds after Notre Dame’s Danny Nelson received a five-minute major and game misconduct for cross checking following a lengthy replay review at 6:09 of the third period.

Sophomore center Cole Knuble of Notre Dame had assists on both goals (Nelson and defenseman Michael Mastrodomenico also had helpers) while junior goaltender Say had a second straight strong performance in the net, stopping 25 Penn State shots, 14 of them in the second period.

It probably won’t be surprising to see Jackson, who announced before this season that he was retiring after his 20th season behind the Irish bench, will stay with Say next Friday and Saturday nights when the Irish visit Wisconsin for a pair of 8:30 showdowns with the Badgers.

The Irish, who fell to 9-10-1 overall and 3-16-1 in the Big Ten for 11 points, conclude their regular season against league leader and likely No. 1 Michigan State Feb. 28 and March 1. Then Notre Dame will begin Big Ten Tournament play on the road against the second-place team in a best-of-three quarterfinal series March 8-10.

No. 8 Ohio State, coming off its sweep at Notre Dame, completed a home sweep of Wisconsin with a 4-2 victory Saturday night. The victory lifted the Buckeyes into a second-place tie with Minnesota with 40 points each, three behind No. 2 Michigan State, which was idle this week, The Golden Gophers played to a 2-2 tie at No. 12 Michigan, but the Wolverines picked up the extra point with their 1-0 shootout win.

The loss by the sixth-place Badgers left them with 24 points, 13 more than the Irish, who cannot catch Wisconsin even with four victories in their final four games.

Saturday night, the Irish had a pair of power-play opportunities in the first period but failed to score while outshooting Penn State 7-5. That wasn’t the case for the Nittany Lions, however, when Fink and the 5-foot-5 Dzhaniyev, a senior left wing from Brooklyn, N.Y., entered the Irish zone guarded by three Notre Dame players. Fink passed the puck over to Dzhaniyev, who buried it behind Say for a 1-0 lead at 17:37.

Sophomore Reese Laubach, who centers for Fink and Dzhaniyev, was banished from the game at 3:13 of the second period when he received a five-minute major and game misconduct for high sticking Tyler Carpenter. The Irish capitalized at 4:33 when Danny Nelson’s pass found Knuble in the slot for a shot that Sergeev saved but could not control. Biondi jumped on the rebound for his 12th goal of the season and seventh power-play goal – both team highs.

Sergeev made four saves on Irish shots before the major penalty was completed, and then later in the period he made another five saves in a span of 69 seconds to keep the game tied at 1-1.

DeGraves then deflected a shot past Say at 15:05 to make it 2-1 Penn State. Notre Dame defenseman Henry Nelson was whistled at 16:47 for holding, and the Nittany Lions’ power play suddenly became a 5-on-3 advantage when Irish penalty-killer Carter Slaggert went off for cross checking at 17:23. But Say came up with four saves over a span of 32 seconds in the 18th minute as Penn State closed the period on an 8-1 shot run.

It appeared Penn State went up 3-1 at 1:19 of the third period when JJ Wiebusch’s shot hit off the post and the puck rolled along the goal line behind Say. But an overhead view of the play saw the puck never completely going over it, and freshman defenseman Jimmy Jurcev swept it out of the crease to keep the game at 2-1.

At 6:09, Penn State requested a review of Notre Dame center Danny Nelson initiating a hit to the head of a Penn State defender. A lengthy review revealed that the sophomore center had and he received a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Fink’s game-winner, off passes from Simon Mack and Dylan Lugris, came 28 seconds later.

But the Irish regathered themselves and Janicke scored his 11th goal of the season and his second shorthanded tally when Knuble sent him in alone of Sergeev at 9:06 to make it 3-2. But the Penn State goalie then stoned the Irish the rest of the way, turning aside six shots before Jackson pulled Say at 17:40 and two more afterward until the final seconds ticked off the clock.
