Chargers Fall in Overtime; Thomas, Cosey Injured
Danville, IL – D’Monte Brown hit two of his game-high 24 points with 0.06 of a second left in overtime to lift Garrett College to a 78-76 quarterfinal win in the National Junior College Athletic Association District II Tournament late Thursday night. Ancilla’s heave at the buzzer bounced off the backboard.
Ancilla played the last two minutes of regulation and overtime without the services of their leading scorer, as Jakylen Thomas injured his ankle and left the game. The Chargers also did not have the services of guard Brock Cosey who was on crutches when he arrived at the gym tonight.
Ancilla build a 15 point first half advantage and then watched it shrink as four of the starters were in foul trouble. Shots were not falling for the reserves and a lack of size inside led to several inside baskets.
Thomas led Ancilla with 20 points, with reserve Shak Johnson adding 16 points and 10 rebounds in over 34 minutes of action off the bench. Keith Rupert added 13 points, all in the first half. Rico Swanson, Jr. had 13 points and eight assists. Marco Beverly finished with 10 rebounds, despite early foul trouble.
The Chargers will meet Sandhill College Friday at 4 p.m. eastern. The winner of that game will play Saturday for a chance at fifth place.
