Another shutout, Ebersole’s double spark third straight win

Ebersole matches 2017 total in 75 minutes; Beck adds goal, assist

BLUFFTON, Ohio — Allison Ebersole scored her second and third goals of the season Sunday afternoon as the Goshen College women’s soccer team shut out Bluffton University 5-0 at the Emory P. Sears Complex on the BU campus.

Mara Beck added a goal and an assist while Diana Ramirez and Areanna Holifield each opened their scoring accounts for Goshen (3-1). The Maple Leafs outshot the Beavers (0-3) 30-10, peppering the net with 17 shots on target.

On the opposite end of the field, Katie Baer made five saves in 75 minutes before Kadie Spoor finished off the team’s second straight clean sheet. The Maple Leaf defense has not allowed a goal in its last 190 minutes.

Ebersole opened the match’s scoring four seconds after the midpoint of the first half on an assist from Amanda Heckaman; the 1-0 score would stay the same until halftime despite 16 Maple Leaf shots.

“We got off to a slow start again but really took control of the game as it went along,” Goshen coach Justin Crew said. “I was very happy with how the team responded after halftime. Overall it was a good total team win.

Ramirez took a Beck pass to double the Maple Leaf advantage in the 48th minute, but the floodgates wouldn’t really open until just before the clock showed 20 minutes to play.

Holifield’s goal came from a Lauren Cernak assist in the 70th minute, Ebersole added her second with 14:53 remaining and Beck scored with 10:01 on the clock. Taliah Borom registered an assist on the penultimate goal.

Two of Baer’s saves came before the 12-minute mark of the first half; over the final 78 minutes, GC had a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal. The lone shot against Spoor sailed wide to the left.

Lauren Cernak paced the Maple Leafs with six shots; Mara Beck and Megan Bower finished with three apiece. Beck’s four attempts on target led all players.

“Kayla Shaw really had a strong performance today,” Crew said. “She did a lot of little things in the midfield today that often gets overlooked.”

Bluffton’s Skylar Liming recorded six shots to lead the hosts while Sienna Sullivan made a dozen saves.

The Maple Leafs return home to take on the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
