Badgers drop first postseason game to Buckeyes
UW trails 1-0 in best-of-three series
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Wisconsin men’s hockey opened the Big Ten tournament, facing Ohio State for the third game on Friday night at Value City Arena.

After tying with the second-seeded Buckeyes in their meeting last Saturday and taking five of six points last weekend in Columbus, Ohio State’s scoring was too much to handle for the Wisconsin defense in a 9-1 defeat.

A decent start for the Badgers included a power-play chance, but a pass back to a vacant point as the opportunity expired resulted in an odd-man rush led by Carson Meyer coming out of the box and finished by Collin Peters.

Meyer would score his own four minutes later when a centering pass went off a Badger skate.

When Wisconsin fell behind 3-0 in the second, it looked as if a repeat of last Saturday’s game could be a possibly for the Badgers. Ohio State killed that thought when senior forward Carson Meyer recorded a hat trick in the second period and finished off a fourth tally, leaving him with five total points on the night.

Wisconsin would give up five more goals to follow. Captain Wyatt Kalynuk netted his seventh goal of the season with just over six minutes left in the third period to get Wisconsin on the board.

Straight from the rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato:
“They battled in different areas better than we did. I thought they made some good plays and finished. We didn’t finish. We didn’t create the offense that we did last week. The good thing is we get another chance tomorrow.”

“Hockey is a game where it doesn’t matter what happened last week or last game. The team that comes out and executes, finishes at the net and makes the most of their chances, things like this happen… But the thing is, the game is over and we’ll refocus and get after it tomorrow.”

Up Next: Wisconsin will face Ohio State again tomorrow in game two of a best-of-three series. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. with a stream on BTN+ and radio play-by-play on 1310 WIBA, the Badger Radio Network and the iheart radio app.
