No.24 Southeastern Turns in Solid Team Effort Versus Johnson & Wales
LAKELAND, Fla. – Fueled by a dynamic performance from junior midfielder Craig Barker, the No. 24 Southeastern University men’s soccer team remained unbeaten in Sun Conference play. The Fire defeated the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats 4-1 for their first 4-0 start in TSC play in program history.
Barker recorded his first hat trick in a Southeastern uniform, netting three of the four Fire goals.
The Newcastle, England natives first score came in the 7th minute off a penalty kick goal.
“Our transition game was really good tonight. We got our key guys freed up and in good places and they executed. It was a good team win,” shared head coach Clay Roberts.
Coming off the bench in the 12th minute, freshman forward Eric Ugarte made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net for the second time this season off a cross from junior defender Joey Dotson to put the Fire ahead 2-0 in the 18th minute.
In the 20th minute, Barker rocketed a shot from 25 yards out into upper right corner of the frame to put SEU ahead 3-0.
The Fire took a 3-0 lead into the half.
Just 16 seconds into the second half, Barker cut into the top of the box and rifled the ball in to notch the hat trick. This marked the first time an SEU player scored a hat trick since Christian Bores did so on 9/11/12 versus Clearwater Christian.
The Wildcats netted their lone goal of the match in the 87th minute off a free kick.
The battle between SEU and JWU was intense, as both teams combined for 40 fouls and nine yellow cards.
In his first collegiate start in goal, sophomore David Hubbard picked up the win, recording three saves in the victory.
The Fire have a week off of play before resuming Sun Conference action on Wednesday October 10 in Babson Park, as SEU takes on Webber International. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
