Baseball Bounces Back With Pair of Victories Against Wayne State Saturday

DETROIT, Mich. — The Purdue University Northwest baseball team responded from their loss on Friday as the Pride had two stellar pitching performances from their starting pitchers as they swept both games of a doubleheader on Saturday.

PNW won game 1, 4-2, before taking game 2, 4-1, at Harwell Field in Detroit, Michigan.

GAME 2: PNW 4, WSU 1
Junior Ray Hansen (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) put PNW on the board in the second inning with his RBI single which scored Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) to make it 1-0. Michael Woods (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) hit into an RBI groundout which scored Hansen.

PNW busted through for two more runs the following inning. That is all the Pride needed the rest of the way.

After a couple of miscues on Wayne State, Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) singled through the right side that scored Nick Albanese (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) to make it 3-0. Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean) extended the Pride lead to 4-0 with a hit to left scoring Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage).

Wayne State got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning but that was the only run the Warriors got during the second game as PNW captured the second game 4-1.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Haczynski (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) picked up the win on the mound to improve to 3-1. Haczynski went all seven innings, scattering four hits, allowing only one run, issuing four walks and striking out six.

GAME 1: PNW 4, WSU 2
Thorn
opened up the first game right away with an RBI single to right center scoring John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) after he walked a few at-bats earlier.

A couple of innings later, PNW put up a three-spot in the top of the fifth inning to go ahead 4-0. After Thorn singled in Cory again to make it 2-0, Hilbrich connected on his second home run of the season to right center which scored Thorn.

The Warriors added two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning but that was all Wayne State would get as the Pride won 4-2.

Sophomore Chad Patrick (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) recorded the win on the mound for his second victory of the season. Patrick went all seven innings, scattering five hits, allowing two runs, issuing three walks and striking out 11.

PNW (12-14, 8-3 GLIAC) and Wayne State (23-7, 7-4 GLIAC) conclude their series Sunday, April 7 for a one-nine inning game starting at 12 p.m. CT.
