SYLVANIA, Ohio. — The Bethel Pilots (9-13, 5-11) took #9 Lourdes (17-6, 14-2) to four sets but could not knock off the ranked squad 3-1 Tuesday night.
A solid start for the Pilots as they had the game tied 3-3 early in the first set but soon lost some momentum and found themselves down 11-6. Without a solid offensive run, Lourdes grabbed set one with a 25-19 win.
Set two did not fare well for the Pilots early on, but they fought back with kills from Ege Gul and Marcos Henrike to tie the game up at 15. A back-and-forth end to the second set saw BU win 26-24 with a kill by Henrike.
Like the second set, the Pilots were down early but couldn’t find any runs this time. With a slight push at the end with a 6-3-point run, Lourdes was up enough to still win out for their second set victory.
In the fourth set, Bethel could tie 8-8, but Lourdes found a 6-1 run to put them up 14-9. BU made a push and got the set to 21-19 with Lourdes still up, but BU couldn’t stop the opposition as Bethel lost the fourth set, which gave Lourdes a 3-1 victory.
Marcos Henrike led with 17 kills during the match. Arthur Barreto had 10 and Ege Gul had nine. Erik Malek was able to record 40 assists while digs were spread out with Barreto (9), Henrike (8), Miguel Rodrigues (8), Malek (5), and Gul (4).
