Bethel Women’s Soccer Falls on Road to Lourdes

Sylvania, Ohio – The Bethel women’s soccer team took to the road on Saturday and fell to Lourdes (Ohio) by the score of 2-0. The Pilots fall to 2-4-2 on the season ahead of a road matchup with Aquinas (Mich.) on Wednesday.

It didn’t take long for the Gray Wolves to light up the scoreboard, as Clare Ciarlino received a ball from Courtney Knoerl and beat Tessa Zimmerly (SO/Shipshewana, Ind.) on the far side to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the match. Grace Smithberger (SR/South Bend, Ind.) nearly answered with a goal of her own in the fifth minute but missed wide. Lourdes got four more shots away in the first 45 but none found the net as Zimmerly made saves on two of them. The Pilots got five shots off in the first stanza but could not dent the scorebook in a scoreless first half.

Lourdes continued their offensive output in the second half, firing three shots in the first five minutes. The Pilot defense held strong, keeping the Gray Wolves from extending the lead any further until the 72nd minute when the Pilots blocked a shot but Lourdes’ Remy Houttekeir corraled the rebound and fired it past the Pilots to take a 2-0 lead.

The Pilots missed four shots in the second stanza, including one saved in the 90th minute off the foot of Jessi Fry (JR/Martinsville, Ind.) and the Pilots could not muster any more offense in a 2-0 defeat.

“We were a step behind the play today in terms of our engagement,” noted Head Coach Jamie Lindvall. “We can do a much better job with our collective play and we just need to keep working on the details as we continue building towards conference play.”
