Big Apple Badgers: Wisconsin is Pinstripe Bowl bound

UW to face Miami at Yankee Stadium on Dec. 27

MADISON, Wis. – Bright lights. Big city. Historic venue. It all adds up to a unique opportunity for the Wisconsin football team, which was selected to play Miami in the 2018 New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York City. The game will take place on Dec. 27 at 4:15 p.m. and be televised by ESPN.

“We are very excited to be selected for the Pinstripe Bowl,” UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said. “The Yankees are a first-class organization that exemplifies tradition and success and it is truly an honor to be associated with them.”

Extending the longest current streak in the Big Ten, the Badgers will play in a bowl game for the 17th consecutive season. That is tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the country.

Yankee Stadium adds to the list of iconic venues in which Badger football has played throughout the years, a list that includes the Rose Bowl and Lambeau Field.

The Pinstripe Bowl is in its ninth year, and fifth of its affiliation with the Big Ten. Big Ten schools are 3-1 in the Pinstripe Bowl with Penn State, Northwestern and Iowa all earning victories. Wisconsin will play just its second game in the state of New York, having played to a 20-20 tie at Syracuse on Sept. 18, 1971.

With an alumni base of nearly 4,000, New York City boasts UW-Madison’s fifth-largest alumni population, and largest outside of the Midwest.

“We have a very large contingent of dedicated fans and alumni in the New York area and look forward to being able to connect with them,” Alvarez said. “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our players to spend the holiday season in New York City. I am sure it will be an experience they never forget.”

Wisconsin and Miami have squared off five times previously, including twice in bowl games. That includes last year’s Orange Bowl in which the Badgers emerged victorious, 34-24.

The Hurricanes finished the season 7-5, including a 4-4 record to tie for third place in the ACC Coastal Division.
