Big First Quarter Carries RV TU to Narrow Victory

SYLVANIA, Ohio – On the road in a midweek matchup, the Trojans grabbed their seventh-straight win of the season. RV Taylor (13-3) started the game with an 18-5 lead after the first quarter, before holding on for the 66-63 triumph over Lourdes (1-3).

For the seventh-consecutive contest, TU held its opponents to under 70 points, improving its record to 13-1 in such games this season. Taylor forced 16 turnovers from the Lourdes Gray Wolves, while nabbing 10 steals in the afternoon competition.

An 11-0 run for the Trojans defined the first stanza, as the visitors hit four-consecutive shots without a miss, including three triples from three different players. The TU squad finished the period with a game-high 13-point lead, after nailing four treys at a 57.1 percent rate.

The Purple and Gold needed every bit of its early lead created in the opening quarter, as the Gray Wolves marched right back in the following period. LU responded with its own strong shooting display, making four-of-seven attempts from long range to decrease the deficit to four, heading into halftime.

Lourdes continued to fight after the break, gaining an edge of four points halfway through the third. The LU lead was short-lived, as the Trojans ended the quarter on a 10-3 rally to retake control of the game.

TU matched its first quarter advantage of 13 points four minutes into the fourth quarter, carrying a 59-46 edge over the host squad. The Gray Wolves battled in the final minutes, coming as close as two points, before Taylor closed out the 66-63 win.

Merideth Deckard brought the offensive firepower on Wednesday, sinking six three-pointers with an 85.7 three-point field goal percentage. The junior guard posted a team-high 22 points in her sixth-straight double-digit outing and her fourth-consecutive performance with at least five treys. Deckard also distributed the basketball well, leading all Trojans with five assists.

Following a one-game absence, Madisyn Fischer came out strong off the bench, pouring in 16 points for TU. The senior also added four assists, four three-pointers and three rebounds in 22 minutes of action.

TU is scheduled to return to Crossroads League play on Saturday, taking on Saint Francis (8-5, 3-2 CL) on the road at 1:00 pm.
