Bishop Dwenger rallies for First Volleyball State Championship
Behind a record-setting performance by junior Eva Hudson, Fort Wayne Dwenger rallied from a two-set deficit to pull off a 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-15, 17-15) win over Brebeuf in the Class 3A championship match.

Hudson recorded 33 kills to set a five-set match record, previously held by Anna Logan of Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, who had 20 kills in 2012.

The win for coach Tim Houser’s Saints marks the first state title for the program, which last appeared in the state finals in 1979.

After dropping the first two sets, Dwenger (33-2) fell behind, 14-9, in set three and saw the Braves serve for the match at 25-24. However, a Kristin Bobay kill and a Brebeuf attack error gave Dwenger a game-point, which Hudson put away with a kill to keep the Saints in the match.

Dwenger dominated set four and looked to cruise in the decisive set by breaking out to an 8-2 lead. Yet, Brebeuf fought back for a 12-10 lead and eventually had two match points, but couldn’t convert. Dwenger drew even at 15-15 on a service error and back-to-back blocks by Hudson and Olivia Clark ended the match.

Coach Kathryn Haughs’ Braves (23-12) were led by Sydney Robinson, who had 23 kills.
