TCC’s Gabby Kreykes Leads WBKB Postseason Award List

CHICAGO — A total of 12 schools were represented when the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its women’s basketball postseason award winners on Monday night.  Eight of the schools claimed multiple honors.

Capturing the most awards was second-place regular-season finisher University of St. Francis with five accolades, followed by Cardinal Stritch University with four.  Garnering three separate recognitions were regular-season champion Saint Xavier University, Olivet Nazarene University, Trinity Christian College, Governors State University and St. Ambrose University.

The rest of the list featured two representatives from Lincoln College and one each from Trinity International University, Holy Cross College, Indiana University Northwest and Judson University.

For all-conference nods alone, St. Francis again topped the list with four awardees with Saint Xavier, Olivet Nazarene and Governors State all right behind with three spots on the three teams.

The breakdown for the all-league teams had five representatives on the first team and ten on the second to go along with ten honorable mention recipients.  All five selections on the first team were first-time honorees on the top team.  Those individuals were Governors State’s Sharnita Breeze (Justice, Ill.), Olivet Nazarene’s Kennedy Johnson (Romulus, Mich.), Saint Xavier’s Claire Austin (Chicago, Ill.), Trinity Christian’s Gabby Kreykes (St. John, Ind.) and St. Francis’ Andriana Acosta (Crest Hill, Ill.).

Kreykes came away with the top honor, as well, being named the CCAC Player of the Year.  A four-time league Player of the Week, she ranked No. 1 in the conference in scoring (22.1 ppg) and No. 3 in rebounding (10.9 rpg).  Nationally, she was No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, in those two categories.

Kreykes’ other top marks included her 2.7 steals per game (seventh in the league) and .423 field goal percentage (eighth).  The 5-10 senior guard also totaled 14 double-doubles among her 21 contests.

Cardinal Stritch collected two of the other three top individual awards with Ella Diny (Wrightstown, Wis.) being named the CCAC Freshman of the Year and Natalie Tomaszewski (Shorewood, Wis.) the Newcomer of the Year.

Diny, a guard, led her team and ranked seventh in the league averaging 14.0 points per game in her first collegiate season.  She also tied for the No. 3 spot in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at .390 and averaged 4.8 rebounds per contest.

Tomaszewski was a force inside as a forward, where the 6-2 junior blocked 40 shots on the season, or two per game, to rank third in the CCAC.  She also averaged 9.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per outing.

Claiming CCAC Coach of the Year honors for the second time since taking over the St. Francis program four years ago was Steve Brooks for guiding the Saints to a 21-4 regular-season record and a No. 16 national ranking, the highest of any of the conference teams.

St. Ambrose University closed out the list of award winners by being named the CCAC Champions of Character Team.  Among the Fighting Bees’ many servant leadership activities, the team adopted four families in a local school district for Christmas and also made homemade Christmas cards, baked Christmas cookies and sung Christmas carols outside an assisted living facility in Bettendorf, Iowa.
