The Centier Bank Performers of the Week are Boone Grove senior pitcher Ty Bothwell, Andrean senior designated hitter Tom Schutz, Lake Central senior outfielder Jessica Kiefor, South Bend Saint Joseph senior catcher Megan Welsh, and South Bend Saint Joseph senior tennis player Maddie Yergler.
In Saturday’s Class 2A Plymouth baseball semistate, the Indiana University-bound left-hander Bothwell tossed a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to help the Wolves clinch their first trip to the state title game with a 1-0 win over top-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic. Boone Grove (21-5) meets Southridge (25-6) at 1 p.m. CDT on June 16 for the state title at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
In Saturday’s Class 3A Kokomo baseball semistate, Schutz went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the top-ranked 59ers’ 13-2 victory over Jay County. Andrean (30-6) takes on No. 3 Silver Creek (25-2) at 4 p.m. on June 16 for the state championship at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
In Saturday Class 4A state softball title game held at Purdue University, Kiefor was the recipient of the mental attitude award in the No. 2 Indians’ 5-2 loss to No. 9 Decatur Central. Lake Central finishes with a 29-5 record.
In Saturday’s Class 3A state softball championship game at Purdue University, Welsh came up with two hits and an RBI in the No. 4 Indians’ 3-1 setback to top-ranked and defending state champion New Palestine. Saint Joseph closes the season with a 25-6 record.
In Saturday’s IHSAA state tennis individual singles’ championship at the Indianapolis Racquet Club, Yergler came up short in her bid for a state title with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 loss to Providence junior Halli Trinkle. Yergler ends up with a 17-2 record.
Special recognition also goes out to Bremen sophomore softball player Erin Coffel, who was recently named the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School North Region Player of the Week for the games played the week of May 28-June 3.
The Centier Bank Performer of the Week is open to any male-female student athlete who participates in any IHSAA sanctioned sport and whose school is in the Centier Bank geographic area.
