ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – A member of the Southeastern University women’s soccer team earned a special distinction yesterday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Melissa Corrie was named the 2018 Select Sport America Champion of Character, receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
Select Sport America selects one NAIA student athlete each season to receive the scholarship.
Corrie has exemplified respect for both the game of soccer and the opponent. Corrie spurred on her teammates to begin hand-writing notes of encouragement for opposing teams to be delivered in person following the conclusion of each match.
The Jacksonville native also is one of the student athletes who helped lead a group on Southeastern’s campus called Athletic Bible Study, which holds weekly small group gatherings, as well as monthly corporate gatherings. Corrie’s leadership in this endeavor has allowed student athletes at SEU to have an outlet to not only grow in their faith, but also as young men and women.
Corrie has also balanced a nursing major with being a student-athlete and excelled in both. Corrie has been on The Sun Conference All-Academic Team each of the last three seasons, as well as an NAIA-Daktronic Scholar Athlete each of the past two years and will likely earn the accolade once again this season.
Corrie has helped organize several Southeastern summer mission trips. She hopes to use her nursing degree to help her become a full-time medical missionary overseas.
