Creviston, Tsirigos Earn Indiana’s Big Ten Medal of Honor

Indiana seniors selected for conference’s most prestigious award for athletics and scholastic excellence

ROSEMONT, Ill. — As the Big Ten continues its celebration for the 103rd class of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, Indiana announced that Derek Creviston from the men’s soccer team and CaraMia Tsirigos of the softball team have been named the Hoosiers’ 2016-17 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients. The pair was honored at the seventh-annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase on Monday, at the Indiana University Auditorium.

The Big Ten, the nation’s oldest collegiate conference, commemorates the 103rd anniversary of a very unique tradition – the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference’s most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student from the graduating class of each university who had “attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work.” Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,500 students competing in intercollegiate athletics, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In more than 100 years of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 students have earned this distinction.

As Indiana’s designated player, Tsirigos leads the softball team in home runs with eight this season and has knocked 25 home runs in her career, which is tied for fifth all-time at Indiana. She is currently batting .305, a career best for the senior. Her 111 career walks is tied for second all-time in program history. Tsirigos has played in 174 games in a Hoosier uniform, with 174 starts.

Off the field, Tsirigos is an Executive Board Member for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which works to act as a liaison between athletes and the athletic department. She has also been greatly involved in the Hoosier Heroes Leadership and Emerging Leaders programs. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, she was also named a 2016 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Tsirigos will graduate with a major in Sport Marketing and Management and a minor in the Kelley School of Business.\

Creviston was a leader on and off the pitch for the Hoosiers, earning the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree this past season. For his career, Creviston appeared in 59 matches for Indiana, earning 57 starts. The Atlanta, Ga., native was a stalwart on the Hoosiers’ backline during his time playing for the Cream & Crimson, but also totaled one goal and one assist during his junior season. Creviston was also a standout in the classroom, earning three Academic All-Big Ten honors.
