Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | April 16-22

 

AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League announced its athletes of the week on Monday, recognizing the top performers from the week of April 16 through April 22. In order to be considered for the award, a student-athlete must be nominated by their institution’s Sports Information Director.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Colby Malson, Goshen

Malson turned in three perfect outings to record three saves for Goshen, setting GC’s all-time single-season saves mark in the process. Malson fanned 10 of the 15 batters he faced and did not allow a hit or a walk over five innings of work.

 

Baseball Player of the Week
Francisco Ondina, Spring Arbor

Ondina highlighted a big week for Spring Arbor that saw the Cougars top NCAA Division I Toledo and sweep Grace. Ondina hit .529 and slugged .882 with seven runs, four extra-base hits, seven runs batted in and two steals in the four SAU victories.

 

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Breena Smith, Marian

Smith went 4-0 with one run allowed over 27 innings, while also recording 30 strikeouts to lead No. 2 Marian to an 8-0 week that included a sweep of No. 11 IWU. Smith posted a 0.48 WHIP and a 0.26 ERA and closed the week with a no-hitter against Goshen.

 

Softball Player of the Week
Jordan Burman, Spring Arbor

Burman helped Spring Arbor to a 5-1 week by hitting .444 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and three home runs. Burman also added seven runs, seven RBI, six walks, one steal and one double, while scoring in all six games for the Cougars.

 

Men’s Golf Player of the Week
Cameron Luczka, Indiana Wesleyan

Luczka turned in second-place finishes at the Ackerman-Allen Classic and A.C Eddy Invite, shooting a 72 and 71 in the two single-round events to lead Indiana Wesleyan to team finishes of fourth and second.

 

Women’s Golf Player of the Week
Shelly Shafer, Indiana Wesleyan

Shafer tied for first at the Battle of Brookwood and finished second at the Ackerman-Allen Classic to help IWU score a pair of second-place finishes. Shafer highlighted her week by breaking IWU’s school record with a round-two score of 71 at Brookwood.

 

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Jacob Macri, Bethel

Bethel led Bethel to wins over IU South Bend and Grace Bible by going undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Pilots. Macri did not drop a set in his two singles wins and scored an 8-3 win in doubles play against IUSB.

 

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Caroline Boger, Bethel

Boger scored two wins at No. 2 singles for Bethel and also took a win in her lone doubles match of the week to help the Pilots top Grace Bible and IUSB.

 

Men’s Outdoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Jordan Downs, Bethel

Downs won the pole vault and long jump, while taking fourth in the 4×100-meter relay to pace Bethel at the Indiana Little State Championships. Downs turned in the fourth-best mark in the NAIA in the long jump this season and also hit a B standard in the pole vault.

 

Men’s Outdoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Presley Martin, Marian

Martin’s time of 1:51.54 in the 800-meters was the fifth best in the NAIA this season and automatically qualified the senior for NAIA Nationals. Martin took 17th-of-88 in the event at the Duke Invitational.

 

Women’s Outdoor TF Field Athlete of the Week
Katrina Tovar, Spring Arbor

Tovar recorded top-four finishes in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump for SAU, hitting the B standard in the pole vault with the 10th-best score in the NAIA this season, while setting a school record with a leap of 5.52 meters in the long jump.

 

Women’s Outdoor TF Track Athlete of the Week
Alex Berends, Taylor

Berends took two victories at the Indiana Little State Championships, winning the 1,500-meters and 4×800-meter relay. Berends helped Taylor hit the B mark in the 4×800 relay with a time of 9:27.10.
