Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | Aug. 26 – Sept. 1
AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from the week of August 26 through September 1. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.
Volleyball Attacker of the Week
Rachel Klitzing, Indiana Wesleyan
Klitzing hit .423 and averaged 2.9 kills and 0.9 blocks per set to help Indiana Wesleyan upset No. 1 Park and No. 2 Columbia during a 4-0 week. The junior middle hitter nailed 15 kills in 31 swings to go with five blocks in the 3-1 win over top-ranked Park.
Volleyball Defender of the Week
Megan Hawley, Marian
Hawley spearheaded a 5-0 week for No. 24 Marian with 6.26 digs per set. The senior scooped at least 15 digs in all five outings, surpassing 20 three times and setting a career-high with 34 in a five-set thriller over RV Trinity Christian.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Alex Falcone, Indiana Wesleyan
Falcone led IWU to wins over the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams in the nation during a 4-0 week. Falcone tossed up 11.0 assists per contest, including 43 assists in a four-set win over No. 1 Park and 54 in the four-set upset of No. 2 Columbia.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Filipe Mendonca, Indiana Wesleyan
Mendonca highlighted a strong week for IWU, scoring three times in a 4-2 win over Lawrence Tech and adding another strike in a 2-1 victory against Indiana Tech.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Gonzalo Salo, Grace
Salo was busy in goal for the Lancers, stopping nine shots in 200 minutes of action, including five saves in GC’s 1-1 tie with No. 25 Southeastern.
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Erin Oleksak, Marian
Oleksak continued to impress early into her collegiate career, scoring twice in a 2-0 win for RV Marian at Marymount, before adding one goal and one assist in a 4-0 blanking of No. 24 Hope International.
Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Delanie Hill, Marian
Hill led the defensive efforts for RV Marian in wins at Marymount and No. 24 Hope International, as the Knights did not allow a goal in either match.
Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Hannah Stoffel, Huntington
Stoffel led HU at the Manchester Hokum Karem by running a 5:04 mile in one of three one-mile intervals and posting a three-mile total time of 15:49 to set a new course record.
Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Adrien Gentie, Huntington
Gentie ran a 4:28 mile during one of his four one-mile intervals for HU at the Manchester Hokum Karem, setting a new course record with a four-mile total time of 18:37.
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Liza Lewis, Marian
Lewis went 3-0 while playing at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles for Marian, helping the Knights to league wins over Saint Francis and Huntington.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Fabricio Galvan, Grace
Galvan fueled a 4-3 upset for Grace over No. 17 Northwestern Ohio by scoring wins at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles. Galvan closed the week 4-0 after also scoring two wins in GC’s 6-1 win over Goshen.
