Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | February 17-23


AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from February 17 through 23. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Kyle Mangas, Indiana Wesleyan

Mangas was at it again for No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan, logging two more 30-point performances in IWU’s wins over No. 23 Grace and Taylor. Mangas poured in 34.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per victory, shooting 64.1 percent from the floor and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.


Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Becca Buchs, Taylor

Buchs went 11-of-18 from beyond the arc to lead No. 7 Taylor to wins over RV Huntington and No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan. The senior All-American netted 25.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per victory, while breaking her own TU record with 112 made triples on the year.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Justin Rasmussen, Bethel

Rasmussen tossed a seven-inning shutout for Bethel in a 9-0 blowout of Midway. The senior fanned five batters and allowed only five hits and one walk in the victory.


Baseball Player of the Week
Brett Lawson, Taylor

Lawson led Taylor to a series win at Lindsey Wilson, going 3-4 with one home run and eight runs batted in during TU’s doubleheader sweep on Saturday. The senior delivered three RBI in a 13-5 win and five more in a 10-6 victory.


Softball Pitcher of the Week
Emily Cummings, Goshen

Cummings fired a two-hitter in Goshen’s 4-2 win over No. 21 LSU-Alexandria, and finished the week 2-0 in the circle for the Maple Leafs. Cummings did not allow an earned run over 13 innings, scattering six hits and striking out six batters.


Softball Player of the Week
Miranda Wehrle, Indiana Wesleyan

Wehrle hit .563 for No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan over four games, scoring four times and swatting two home runs. Wehrle registered the game-winning hit in each of IWU’s three victories, including a walk-off dinger.


Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Pavle Popovic, Grace

Popovic scored wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles for Grace in a 6-1 team win over Judson.  Popovic did not drop a set in the two matches.


Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Lizzie Bauss, Indiana Wesleyan

Bauss went 5-0 during a trio of wins for No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan, winning twice at No. 1 singles and picking up three No. 1 doubles victories, while dropping only one set in all.
