Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | February 24-March 1
AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from February 24 through March 1. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.
Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
TreVion Crews, Bethel
Crews led the seventh-seeded Pilots to a pair of road victories in the CL Tournament, averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in wins over No. 5 Marian and Taylor. The All-American shot eight-of-17 from deep for a blistering 47.1-percent rate.
Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Becca Buchs, Taylor
Buchs led No. 7 Taylor to a third-straight CL Tournament Championship game by netting 20.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in a pair of narrow wins over MVNU and Huntington. The All-American sank the game-winner against the Cougars to highlight a 68-66 win.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Houston Haney, Grace
Haney fanned 12 batters over nine innings for the Lancers. The junior held Judson to two runs on seven hits and helped Grace take a 3-2 victory in 11 innings.
Baseball Player of the Week
Vincent Herschberger, Spring Arbor
Herschberger paced the SAU lineup in a Crossroads League-opening series against MVNU, hitting .455 with a double, a triple and two home runs in the three games. The junior slugged 1.273 in the series, scored four times and knocked in seven runs.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Emily Cummings, Goshen
Cummings went 4-0 with a save in the circle over five appearances for Goshen last week, allowing only three earned runs in 27.1 innings of work. The senior picked up 17 strikeouts to go with the 0.77 earned-run average.
Softball Player of the Week
Emily Cummings, Goshen
In addition to a four-win showing in the circle for Goshen, Cummings hit .533 with four extra-base hits, four runs and six runs batted in over eight games at the plate for the Maple Leafs.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Eli Steiner, Indiana Wesleyan
Steiner helped No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan to a pair of convincing wins, including a 4-0 defeat of No. 20 Arizona Christian. The junior improved his combined season record to 48-2 with two wins each at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Wildcats.
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Dayana Ortega, Grace
Ortega went 5-1 for the Lancers in Florida last week, playing to a perfect 3-0 clip at No. 2 singles and taking all three matches in straight sets. The junior went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles.
