Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | March 2-8

 

AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the top athletes from March 2 through 8. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.

Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Kyle Mangas, Indiana Wesleyan

The Crossroads League Player of the Year was at it again for No. 2 IWU in the CL Tournament Championship game, this time netting 25 points, six assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block in IWU’s victory over Bethel.

Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Abby Downard, Marian

Downard posted 16 points, nine assists, five steals and three rebounds to help No. 2 Marian top No. 7 Taylor in the Crossroads League Tournament Championship game. In addition to stuffing the box score, Downard sank five-of-nine field goal attempts, including three triples.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Luke Tucker, Mount Vernon Nazarene

Tucker picked up two wins on the bump for Mount Vernon Nazarene, fanning 15 batters over 13 innings with just two earned runs allowed. The freshman righty saw only 12 base runners total and posted a 1.38 earned-run average.

Baseball Player of the Week
Brant Mast, Spring Arbor

Mast highlighted Spring Arbor’s 6-1 week, hitting .524 with 10 runs, two doubles, two home runs and 11 runs batted in. The third baseman also posted a .655 on-base clip and slugged .955 on the week, while homering in the Cougars’ 5-2 upset of No. 2 St. Thomas.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Sydney Wilson, Marian

Wilson logged 25.2 innings in six games of work for No. 4 Marian, going 3-1 in the circle with a 0.55 earned-run average. The lefty sophomore fanned 17 hitters and allowed only four walks.

 

Softball Player of the Week
Miranda Wehrle, Indiana Wesleyan

Wehrle continued her hot start at the plate for No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan, hitting .405 with two homers, three doubles, 10 runs batted in and eight runs scored in 10 games for the Wildcats.

Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Patrick Doerr, Spring Arbor

Doerr went 6-1 overall for Spring Arbor with three wins at No. 6 singles and three wins in four matches at No. 2 doubles. The senior helped SAU post a 3-1 record on the week.

Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Sela Clifford, Spring Arbor

Clifford had a busy week for Spring Arbor, going 5-1 at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles for the Cougars. The sophomore won all three doubles matches to help SAU score a trio of team wins.
