Crossroads League Announces Athletes of the Week | Sept. 2-8
AVON, Ohio – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Tuesday, recognizing the top athletes from the week of September 2 through 8. Sports Information Directors from the league nominate student-athletes for the award and vote on each week’s winners.
Volleyball Attacker of the Week
Marci Miller, Indiana Wesleyan
Miller averaged 4.2 kills per set at a .349 percentage to lead Indiana Wesleyan to five more victories. Miller reached double figures in kills in four matches, including a 24-kill, three-error showing in IWU’s win over No. 16 Aquinas.
Volleyball Defender of the Week
Morgan Hawley, Marian
Hawley gathered 5.6 digs per set to help No. 24 Marian to a 5-0 week that included a sweep of No. 16 Aquinas. The senior libero had three outings of at least 20 digs, including a 31-dig gem in a five-set win over Thomas More.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Alex Falcone, Indiana Wesleyan
Falcone kept the IWU attack rolling with 196 assists in five more Wildcat victories. The senior setter tossed up 55 helpers in a five-set win over No. 16 Aquinas and averaged 10.9 assists per set on the week.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Cole Russell, Spring Arbor
Russell paced No. 10 SAU in two matches, posting a hat trick in a 5-0 win over Cornerstone, before adding another goal in a 4-2 loss at No. 17 Lindsey Wilson.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Gabe Greenfield, Huntington
Greenfield notched a pair of shutouts in goal for RV Huntington, registering four total saves in 180 minutes of work to help the Foresters to 1-0 wins over Indiana Tech and Michigan-Dearborn.
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Erin Oleksak, Marian
Oleksak continued to shred defenses in three more wins for Marian, as the freshman struck for four goals and three assists to help the Knights outscore their opponents by a 17-2 count in the three outings.
Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Sydney Genatempo, Marian
Genatempo helped the Marian defense post two more shutouts and a 3-2 win at RV The Master’s. The Knights now boast five shutouts in six matches this season.
Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Hannah Stoffel, Huntington
Stoffel posted a blistering personal-best time of 17:19 to easily win the IWU Invite on Friday, finishing 40 seconds ahead of second place and setting a new course record.
Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Adrien Gentie, Huntington
Gentie repeated as the CL Runner of the Week by winning the IWU Invite with a personal-best time of 24:39. Gentie’s performance led Huntington to the meet title over No. 2 IWU and No. 16 Taylor.
Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Maddie Bemisderfer, Indiana Wesleyan
Bemisderfer went 3-0 at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan, helping IWU hold off No. 25 Marian with two wins in a 5-2 decision.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Martin Carrizo, Indiana Wesleyan
Carrizo went 3-0 at No. 2 singles and won all three doubles matches for Indiana Wesleyan. Carrizo did not drop a set and highlighted the week with two wins in IWU’s 7-0 win over No. 21 Marian.
