Defense Propels No. 23 Taylor to Victory
Â
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The No. 23 TU women’s soccer defense was on full display once again, securing the team’s fifth shutout of the season and fourth in a row. Taylor won 3-0 at Campbellsville on Friday in the team’s last non-conference tune-up of 2018.
TU (7-0-2) lost the shot advantage 17-6, but placed five shots on-goal, compared to the Tigers’ (5-3-0) four. In goal for the Trojans, Megan Williams secured the shutout and defended four shots, the most since she had seven against NCAA Division I IUPUI.
Campbellsville had two early shots to open the match, while it took over eight minutes for the Trojans to connect on one.
The Purple and Gold hit the back of the net on their third shot of the contest. Kate Kortenhoeven connected on a shot from 15 yards out to give the visitors a slim 1-0 lead minutes before intermission. Kortenhoeven registered her first-career game-winner and the second netter of her career.
At the half, both teams were deadlock with one save apiece and Campbellsville had four shots.
Both teams opened the second period like the first, with the Tigers taking two early shots before TU even attempted one. Taylor made its first shot count and Hannah Davis scored her first goal of the season. Davis’ goal pushed the lead to 2-0 and the junior tallied the fifth of her career.
Davis nearly scored her second goal of the game in the 74th minute, but the Campbellsville goalie saved it and sent it to Ali Clodgo, who scored the third goal of the game for the Trojans and gave the visitors some extra breathing room. Clodgo tacked on her third goal in the team’s last two matches.
Davis led the team with three shot attempts and all three were on-frame. Erin Teevans added a shot and now leads the team with 27 tries.
Taylor faces a tough task on Wednesday, as the team travels north to play No. 1 Spring Arbor (6-0-1) in the Crossroads League Opener. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
